In 1930 a group of Swiss immigrants created a cooperative of
yerba mate producers in Santo Pipó, Misiones, Argentina. For more than thirty years cooperative was growing and producing yerba mate only to supply other companies, until in the beginning of 1960s they started to make their own yerba mate under the new brand Piporé that was marketed in Argentina and later abroad.
Today Piporé is amongst the 10 largest companies of yerba mate in the country and is the second exporter worldwide.
Pronounced [yer-bah mah-teh] (or [sher-bah mah-teh] in
Rioplatense Spanish). Also known as Ilex paraguariensis, a holly plant natively grown in South America, paricularly in Northern Argentina, Paraguay and Southern Brazil (the term
erva mate is used there more often). Yerba mate is used to make a beverage known as
mate in Spanish, or
chimarrão in Portugese. Oftenly, the term yerba mate is used to describe not only a plant, but also a final product of grinding, drying and aging the plant.
