Cooperativa Liebig
Yerba Mate Reviews
In the 19th century a group of German immigrants, seeking for peaceful and quiet place to live and work, settled in the northeast of Corrientes province in Argentina, where they founded Liebig Colony.
That community of hard working men were the foundation of the Cooperativa Agrícola de la Colonia Liebig, that started its operation on December 19, 1926, led by Walter Orstermann.
Today Cooperativa Liebig is dedicated to the processing, commercialization and distribution of yerba mate not only on the national level, but also worldwide, producing nearly 18 million kilos of yerba mate each year.
Pronounced [yer-bah mah-teh] (or [sher-bah mah-teh] in
Rioplatense Spanish). Also known as Ilex paraguariensis, a holly plant natively grown in South America, paricularly in Northern Argentina, Paraguay and Southern Brazil (the term erva mate is used there more often). Yerba mate is used to make a beverage known as mate in Spanish, or chimarrão in Portugese. Oftenly, the term yerba mate is used to describe not only a plant, but also a final product of grinding, drying and aging the plant.
